A salute to my late great uncle Malcolm Macleod who died in World War I

Posted on January 1, 2024January 1, 2026 By Don MacLeod

Even though most of the people that I will highlight on this website will be named “Don MacLeod”, I am going to highlight other “MacLeod’s” who I researched and liked their story .  Today I wanted to pay tribute to Malcolm Macleod. He was my great uncle (grandfathers brother) who died tragically in the sinking of H M Yacht Iolaire on January 1, 1919. (Read the Story)

The BBC called it the “crowning sorrow of the war”. He was on his way back home from serving in World War I when the ship he was in hit the rocks known as “The Beasts” outside of Stornaway Harbor in Scotland.  205 men died many found by relatives after washing ashore.  No family on the Isle went unscathed.  Here is a picture of my great-uncle and his last known address, my great-grandparent’s names, etc.
